Parent Coaching
Balanced Kids honors the individuality and needs of each family. Our parent coaching services are offered in a variety of formats so that families can choose the level and type of support that works best for them.
What does Parent Coaching entail?
It starts with a simple phone call, free of charge, a chance to get to know each other and understand your parenting and family needs and what will be expected of you during the process. Based on that initial communication, we develop a plan that includes setting family and parenting goals.
How long will it take to achieve our goals?
Sessions are each an hour long. How many sessions depends upon your family, your parenting goals, and the issues you are trying to address. Most families opt for our package of three coaching sessions.
What sort of challenges do you help with?
Nina has experience working with families on a wide range of parenting and family issues, such as how to talk about death or serious illness of a parent or other loved one, how to prepare for a move (locally or cross country), as well as challenging behaviors such as hitting, biting, temper tantrums and meltdowns, frequent arguing and defiance. She can also help parents identify developmentally appropriate behavior, to better understand a typical “phase” versus an issue that requires intervention, medical support, mental health or therapeutic services.
Nina helps parents and children identify strategies to recognize triggers and head off potential problems - calming upsets before they spiral. Parent coaching can reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of parent-child disputes.
What’s expected of me, the parent?
To achieve your parenting goals, it’s essential to “put in the work.” That means you will have “assignments” to complete between sessions and you will be asked to reflect on how well certain strategies are working for you and your family. Above all, you must commit to being open and honest with your coach, so that the work we do together can best address your parenting needs.
How will my child or children be involved?
Balanced Kids works with parents, but it’s ultimately about kids. So their voices are very important. While Balanced Kids does not offer psychotherapy, we must work from the children’s perspective, to best understand their feelings and issues and identify common ground for solutions. When needed, we can make appropriate referrals to connect your family with additional support.
Below is a breakdown of some of the primary methodologies that inform the balanced approach, parent coaching services. Click to learn more about Nina’s school of thought and what she’ll bring to the table in supporting your family.

De-escalation
Learn how to put out the fires. Managing defiant, challenging and unsafe behaviors are a big reason parents initially seek support. As a certified trainer in de-escalation and crisis intervention, Nina brings her skills and experience directly to parents in need.
Collaborative Problem Solving
Problem solve together! Conventional parenting centers on the concept that children “do well if they want to”. That leads to the adults in their lives trying out various methods to make the children “want to.”Collaborative Problem Solving takes a different angle.
